Blog Tour: Engines of Liberty: Rebel Heart by Graham Bradley

REBEL HEART
In 1776, the American rebels were thwarted by British magic. The leaders were executed, but the surviving soldiers went into hiding and kept the revolution alive. By 1984 they have developed better weapons and machinery to even the odds. Now all these "technomancers" need is an army for their arsenal, and their newest recruit is 15 year-old Calvin Adler of Baltimore. The problem is, he’s got a pretty strong will, and might give the technomancers at bit of trouble in training...
SUICIDE RUN
Calvin learns that the technomancers aren't all good guys like he'd thought, and soon runs afoul of the worst of them. Now, with a bomb in his chest and a lot of ground to cover, he has a little over a week to save his life, or else become another casualty in the revolution. Meanwhile, an old enemy comes back stronger than ever, with ambition to spare...

PATRIOT'S GAME
Calvin is on the brink of death. The army is scattered, the commodore is dead, and the British mages know about the technomancers' secret weapon. Just as all hope seems lost, Calvin and his friends find out the mages have a weakness, one that could end the war overnight and liberate the colonials.
But it will take a miracle to reach it...

Graham Bradley is a truck driver by trade, but has been writing since age eight, thanks to the encouragement of a childhood teacher, Mrs. Peplowski.

Likewise, his grandmother made him promise to "do something" with his knack for drawing, so he illustrates as well.

He is fluent in Spanish, and knows the proper method of ironing a dress shirt. Despite spending less than 6 hours of his entire life in Indianapolis, the Colts are his team.

He lives in Henderson, Nevada, with his wife and sons.

Character Casting
Funny thing is, I used character models for many of these people, and a lot of them were friends and family. (Calvin and Godfrey were based on my wife's two brothers, Patrick and Joe.) If they were to be cast for a film or something, I think I'd like some unknowns for those roles. I will say that I think Jonathan Frakes should play Commodore McCracken, and Marina Sirtis should be his wife Edith, for nerdy reasons. And I would demand a side role for myself, I'm just that vain. I think I'd like to be John Penn, the man who recruits Calvin to join the cause. That would be pretty meta.

Snippets
Book 1
Here's a scene from REBEL HEART. It's not the Boston Tea Party, but, well, the similarities are there.

Calvin recalled the trip he’d taken with his father. They’d left Baltimore and led a horse-drawn wagon all the way up to Massachusetts, where Father knew of a captain who would deliver their wool to a wholesaler in Nouveau France, for a small commission. Their meager stock from that season had filled only a small part of the deck on the captain’s ship; the rest of it was dried tea leaves in strong crates secured with a special kind of iron.
“Frosted iron,” the captain whispered to Father. “So as it can’t be magicked away by the mages, you see. It’s a special product from Ohio. Your load’s safe on this ship, Mr. Adler.”
Father was impressed. “And all this tea?”
The captain told how he and a handful of his friends had planted the valuable crop many years prior, tended to it themselves, harvested the leaves and dried them with painstaking care. It would catch a king’s ransom on the open market, compared to what the crew normally sold on their voyages.
Father and the captain shook hands and parted ways. Yet it would seem that not all of the captain’s commercial associates had been so discreet that year. After Calvin and Father had gotten off the ship, a trio of mages showed up, wands in hand, and matching sneers on their faces.
At the time, Calvin hadn’t understood what was happening. The mages demanded to know the captain’s intent for the tea. He and his crew bristled at the question. Some of them quietly grabbed nearby instruments off the deck, but they weren’t holding them the way they held tools. The captain stated his business, that they meant to sell their haul, and the mage casually said he’d have to confiscate the load.
“It just wouldn’t be fair to the other colonists, who don’t have any tea to sell,” the mage had said, signaling for his companions to seize every crate of product. Calvin scratched his head at this; if the captain and his men had done all the work, why shouldn’t they sell it?
Apparently the captain agreed with this sentiment. What happened next was burned into Calvin’s memory sure as a branding iron marked livestock.
Some of the crewmen were still loading crates of tea leaves onto the deck of the boat. Half a dozen crates sat on a platform mounted to the dock, all rigged up with ropes and pulleys so it could swing out over the water. While the platform hung between the dock and the boat, the captain uttered a word in what sounded like an Indian language. One of the crewmembers, a bronze-skinned man with pitch-black hair shaved in an extreme pattern, drew a tomahawk from behind his belt, spun around and hurled it with stunning accuracy at the rigging. The tomahawk’s blade bit into the ropes, sliced them clean through, and unlaced the complicated weave that allowed the platform to move. Six crates plunged into the salty water below, instantly ruined. To save the falling crates, the mages uttered summoning spells in the Old Saxon tongue, but the anti-magical iron did its job.
Calvin was pretty sure a fight had broken out after that, but he didn’t get to see it. Father clapped a hand over Calvin’s eyes and quickly whisked him away, telling him they were to return to Baltimore immediately.
Even now, Father refused to let Calvin speak of that day, and all of his questions since then had been met with a sharp command to put it out of his mind. Calvin had never forgotten it, though. After years of seeing Fitz and Birty squeeze coins out of the Baltimore residents, Calvin eventually understood why the captain had destroyed his load.

Interview with Tom Fallwell

With the upcoming cover reveal for his new book, The Shadow of Narwyrm, author Tom Fallwell took some time to sit down with us.

Tell us a about yourself.
Well, I’m a 65-year-old, retired software developer, or computer programmer if you prefer, and I’ve always been fascinated with fantasy and science-fiction stories, movies and books. I used to collect and read comic books in the 80s and early 90s, am fond of playing RPG (role-playing) games, and love to create characters for games and stories. I live in a suburb of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and spend most of my time at home, either writing, playing games, or watching movies and old TV shows.

How long have you been writing and what inspired you to write?
When I retired, I found I had a lot of time on my hands, and had always wanted to write stories. In the late 80s, I wrote three issues of an obscure comic book called Dark Regions. I wanted to write more, but never had the time. I had the beginning of a story in my head, that I’d been thinking on for a long, long time, and with the encouragement of a good friend, I decided to start writing it down. To my surprise, the story seemed to grab me and take off, and before I knew it, I had a full novel. That was my first novel, Dragon Rising, which was published in late 2014.
My inspiration? Well, God is my inspiration, friends are my inspiration, and just a pure love of wanting to write stories for others to enjoy. It’s a wonderful thing, for me, to tell a story to entertain, and it gives me the greatest satisfaction I have ever had from any previous occupation.

Tell me a little about your book.
The book I’m currently working on is the third book in a fantasy series. The series, Rangers of Laerean, began shortly after writing my first novel, and I have two books from the series already published. The three books tell a story that is basically a trilogy, though I don’t think this will end the series as a whole. The book I’m writing now, The Shadow of Narwyrm, will be the grand finale to the story that began in book #1, A Whisper In The Shadows. Book #2, Where Shadows Fall, continued the story, and that particular storyline will conclude with The Shadow of Narwyrm. The trilogy is the tale of Baric, a Ranger with the legendary Rangers of Laerean, in a world called Hir, and a woman he loves named Whisper. He is a hero bigger than life, with the heart of a common man and compassion for all, yet he’s sent down a destined path that had much sorrow and pain. It’s a heroic tale of sacrifice and duty in the face of tragedy.

Who has been your greatest writing inspiration?
The greatest inspiration for me is J.R.R. Tolkien, though I have many others that inspire me as well. Tolkien’s ability to create a whole new world is what inspired me to do so as well. Hir is a world with a rich lore and history and I enjoy filling it in with characters, politics, economic systems and more. I aspire to create something as good as his Middle Earth.

What would be your ideal writing space?
Honestly, I like just sitting in my room, at my computer. I have plenty of peace and quiet where I am. I suppose, however, it would be nice to live in a place with a beautiful scenic view, perhaps a waterfall on a brook, with a forest backdrop. Maybe something near Yellowstone Park would be nice.

If you could meet any author from any time period, who would it be and why?
Mark Twain. I think it would be awesome to spend time with him, floating down the river on a steamboat and discussing how our lives tend to inspire what we write. His ability to capture and put real life into his characters has always been a fascination for me.

Now a little more about you: If you were stranded on a desert island, what three items would you bring (excluding family, laptop, or writing utensils)?
A jug of Dr. Pepper that never runs empty, a nice recliner, and lots of books. If that is too many things, then make that one book that has the full Lord of the Rings trilogy in it.

We find out the world is going to end tomorrow. How do you live your last day?
Praising the Lord that I’m finally coming home.

If we were to make a movie of your life. Who would play the part of you?
Not so sure anyone would want to, but if I could choose, I would say Stephen Baldwin.

Tell us 5 random things about yourself.
I hate cockroaches. I love banana pudding, with vanilla wafers. My favorite color is blue. I think all people are equal and there is no one better than another. I like to see smiles.

What are the three places you have always wanted to visit but have not yet?
The Redwood National/State Park in northern California. Loch Ness. Wales.

If you could travel to any time in history, when would you visit?
Plymouth Rock in 1620, to watch the disembarkation of William Bradford and the Mayflower Pilgrims.

If you could have dinner with any of your characters, which ones would you choose? What food would you serve?
Baric and Whisper. Roasted pork, a variety of fruits and cheeses, and honey mead.

Okay, crystal ball time. Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years?
Writing books, playing games, watching movies, going to church, pretty much all I am doing now. Honestly, I’m very happy with who I am now and what I’m doing. Doing more of it is all I can really wish for.

Join us for the cover reveal of Tom's new book The Shadow of Narwyrm on August 20th

Review: 5 out of 5 *****

There is way too much to say about this book, but can't without giving anything away. There was a lot of complexity with both Skye, Forrest, and Ash. Each have their secrets, which add to not only the story, but to the depth in which each of them show their love. Ellie's writing style is incredible. There is humor, passion, and sinful pleasure behind her stories that won't let you put the book down. I loved the book, and look forward to more from Ellie Masters.

Pop:

A sex contract seemed like a good idea, until she fell in love.

When Symone Esquire fails to woo her best friend into taking her virginity, his rejection is the catalyst that inspires her to create a sex contract with a local legend, a man nicknamed “The Cherry Popper”, to take her virginity instead.

Sid Cooperton is used to being solicited for sex, being the lead singer of a local rock band does have its perks . . . but when the nerdy, yet intriguing, Symone approaches him with a proposition to take her virginity in exchange for his college tutoring. It’s simply an offer he can’t refuse—even if his reputation for being a virginity exterminator is grossly exaggerated.

Symone wasn’t expecting anything more than a business relationship with Sid, but she soon realizes there’s so much more to her sex tutor than just sex. Matters become even more complicated when her once uninterested best friend, suddenly wants to take their relationship to the next level like she always wanted.

With the relationship she’s always dreamed of within her reach, Symone must make a decision: choose her best friend, the man she’s been in love with her whole life, or choose Sid, the man who has suddenly become the subject of all her fantasies.

The contract has been signed: Symone’s virginity for Sid’s B average.

It was supposed to be simple, until she broke his only rule.

This book contains sexual situations, and language that may not be suitable for anyone under the age of 18.

Review: 5 out of 5*****

This has been my favorite book by V Kelly. The jokes and witty banter in this was incredible. I was sucked in from the beginning and found myself unable to put the book down, especially once I reached the middle. I loved Symone and thought she made the story with her innocence and her Symonisms. I look forward to book 2 releasing.

Sadie bit into a cupcake, then dipped her spoon into a bowl of chocolate ripple ice cream. She seldom ate dessert—and usually pigged out when she did—which is why she normally didn’t. But it was her birthday, and she celebrated it alone. Just like last year. But that was okay; she was going home. And soon. But not soon enough. She was anxious to get on with her life.

First Impressions
(To Be With You Series Book 1)

This is a NA book and is intended for 18+ readers. It contains adult language, sexual innuendos, adult humor and mild sexual encounters with situations that could be uncomfortable for some readers. Also if you have a soft spot for squirrels, you may or may not want to read this book . . . Please keep these warnings in mind, and I hope you enjoy.

He spilled his drink . . .
She hurled her insults . . .

When Gabby Meyers and Trace Martin first met, it ended up being one horrible misunderstanding after another. Trace only wanted to get to know her; she thought he only wanted to get into her pants. Between Gabby’s trust issues and Trace’s uncanny ability to make a lousy first impression, their relationship was doomed from the start.

Trace isn’t going to let one misunderstanding stand in the way of his heart. Determined to make her fall for him, Trace has to overcome a series of obstacles: a womanizing asshole who wants to add a notch in his bedpost; a crazy, overprotective father who wants Trace to participate in something called the “Man Test”; and a psycho one-night stand that won’t leave Gabby alone.

His biggest obstacle, however, is the giant wall around Gabby’s heart.

Review 5 out of 5*****

V Kelly has done it again. This is the third book I've read from her and find each one hysterical. Trace and Gabby's verbal assaults and combacks were witty and flustered the other intensely. I couldn't stop laughing at their first interaction. This book played with my emotions well. It incited anger, hostility, laughter, happiness, and a little bit of shock. I loved it and look forward to reading the second book in the series.
