Book Review: The Dragon Slayer by D.L. Colon

About the Author

Hello Readers. My name isn't really D.L. Colon, but it is a play off of my real name. I have live in Puerto Rico my whole life. I started writing my first novel in 2013. For me writing was a learning experience because my first language is Spanish and even though I speak English pretty fluently, grammar is not my strong suit. It may surprise you, but until Few years ago I hated reading. I found my love for reading, and my inspiration to write, when I read The Summoner by Gail Z. Martin.

I have a Culinary Arts degree, which I'm planning on using now that I moved to the US. On an interesting note, I got the idea for my first book, The Lost City: Drake's Revenge, from playing video games. I'm a gamer at heart, a writer by chance and a chef because it's something I love. I'm currently writing my second novel, which is the second book in The Lost City series. I hope you all enjoy my first novel and continue on with the series when the rest are released.

The Dragon Slayer: The Dragon Empire Book 1

Glaycol Masters comes from a family of Hunters in the continent of Istagar.
Glaycol knows everything there is to know about every mystical creature and how to kill them, except for the Dragons. No one has been ever been able to kill them.
Glaycol still has to take his final test to become a Hunter worthy of bearing the name Masters, His weapon of preference; a great sword.
For his final test Bonca, Glaycol’s father, sent him to hunt the Chimera of the Valley of the Blood and bring each of their heads back. Glaycol has now killed the Chimera and is returning the Forest of Darkness, where he lives with his family on top of a mountain that oversees the city.
When he arrives his family is waiting for him, even his older brothers, who are also hunters, are there to celebrate the graduation of their brother. Once he presents the heads of the Chimera to his father, each of his family members gives him his gift. As they start they all give him a piece of armor until he has a full set of black armor. It is called, The Berserker.
Their celebration is cut short when the leader of the Dragons, Hyglarur, attacks them by surprise; killing everyone except for Glaycol. His new armor absorbed the fire, but he didn’t came out unscratched. He lost his right eye.
Glaycol, now driven by revenge and his family’s creed: Kill them all, has to find clues to where Hyglarur’s brother, Rotwar, is hiding. When he finds him Glaycol attacks, leaving him wounded and with a message for Hyglarur; Hyglarur, I am coming for you and your Dragon Empire. I now know that Dragons can be killed.
Glaycol Masters was once known as the Berserker, but a new name has been given to him. The continent will forever know him as The Dragon Slayer.

Review: Rated 4 out of 5 ****

I must say, I am not usually one for reading Fantasy, but I did enjoy this book. I loved seeing Glaycol's adventures as he seeks to destroy the Dragon Empire. I won't get into too much about the book, because I don't want to give anything away. But this book was pretty cool. The other characters seemed to add more to the story than I would have originally thought.

Drake's Revenge

Life in the World was simple. As always there was war, poverty, power struggles and a new leader for different years, until 2014. That was when the trumpets were heard.
What many thought was the coming of God was, instead, a race for survival. The heavens opened up, not to receive new souls, but it opened to release the battalions of heaven's warriors against a known enemy, The Demons of Hell. The Demons of Hell, led by Raphael, came with one thing in mind, Total Annihilation of The Angels of Heaven. The Angels of Heaven, led by Gabriel and given free reign by God, came with one thing in mind, Total Supremacy over The Demons of Hell. Since they needed neutral ground to fight against each other they used the one available, Earth.
Humanity was pushed to the brink of destruction during the war and people with abilities came to exist in the middle of the conflict. There was a decision made by each side to use one of their Lieutenants to gather intelligence from the enemy. The Angels chose Maria Faith for this task and Hell chose Simon Black. What neither side expected was for Maria and Simon to fall for each other. Even though they kept fighting the war for their sides on Earth, they were quickly losing interest in the battle. They decided to leave the war and build a life together. Both Heaven and Hell kept watch on them but left them alone until something happened. Maria became pregnant with Simon's son. On top of everything else, the boy was half Angel and half Demon.
Heaven and Hell couldn't let the boy live so they plotted to kill him. Maria and Simon, who named the boy Drake Blackfaith, found out about this before the attack and they took Drake to a Guild named Never Too Late. They left Drake with the Guild and a letter, which he was to be given on his 25th birthday. The day of the attack, instead of killing Maria and Simon, Heaven captured Simon and Hell captured Maria. Both of them were to be tortured into revealing the location of Drake. Both Heaven and Hell wanted him because of a prophecy that was passed down 600 years before that says....
On the eve of his 25th year, Heaven and Hell cannot do anything except hide, his wrath and hate cannot be stopped. Both of his sides will unite, to save or destroy what's left of Earth. Heed my warning, for it will come to pass. Nothing can stop it, it's just a matter of time.....
Now the year is 3014 and the war still rages on. Drake is approaching his 25th birthday and this is where our story begins...

King's Inheritence

Review:

Taking place shortly after the book, King's Inheritance, Lucifer is in search of her own champion to burn earth to the ground.

This is a quick easy read that bridges the second book in the series to the anticipated third book. I liked seeing a new take on the story where it focused solely on Lucifer's Champion and how powerful he truly is. It makes me wonder how the Champions selected from the first two books, and the other warriors from the Lost City will fare against such an unstoppable force.

My only criticism is that I wish there was more to the book. I wanted to know more about the characters and why they were banning together to destroy earth.

Review:

This is the second book in the Lost City Series. With the first book's cliffhanging ending, I was already looking forward to this one. The storytelling in this book was well written, much better than the first one. The descriptions were more vivid, the characters well rounded, and there was just enough backstory to wet the appetite for what the story was about to bring.

The beginning of this book was nothing like I thought it would be. It did not continue where book 1 left off. It began with the tale and legend of King Arthur (one of my favorites). I won't give much away, because the more you read this one the more you will want to dive deeper into the story. My only criticism was that the ending left me wanting more of the battle and less of the set up for the next book.

Review:

 

From time to time, I like to step away from my usual favorite genres and check out books that I would typically overlook. Reading Lost City: Drake's Revenge, was a nice change of pace from the norm. There were good moments and bad throughout the story, and I always promise to give an honest review. So here it goes.

 

I thought the plot of this story was well thought out. The characters were well defined and had a decent story arc to them. I loved how it all played out. But with the good qualities, I must also point what I disliked as well.

The beginning of the story was hard to get through. The present tense use was a bit hard to read where I felt certain words, phrases or bits of narration could have been better illustrated in a different way. While I did believe the characters had a nice story arc to them, I felt that the beginning of their processes was a bit rushed. I wished to have seen more of Drake before he began his transitioning faze.

Despite some minor flaws, the book did draw me in and found myself glued to it near the end. The brief teaser at the end has me looking forward to the next installment.
